Hell Tanner isn't the sort of guy you'd mistake for a hero he's a fast-driving car thief, a smuggler, and a stone-cold killer. Facing life in prison for his various crimes, he's given a choice Rot away his remaining years in a tiny jail cell, or drive cross-country and deliver a case of antiserum to the plague-ridden people of Boston, Massachusetts. The chance of a full pardon does wonders for getting his attention. And don't mistake this mission of mercy for any kind of normal road trip-not when there are radioactive storms, hordes of carnivorous beasts, and giant, mutated scorpions to be found along every deadly mile between Los Angeles and the East Coast. But then, this is no normal part of America, you see. This is Damnation Alley....

Damnation Alley eBook Roger Zelazny

This is not Roger Zelazny's best novel by any means, which means it's still better than a lot of other SF novels you'll find out there, past or present.

It takes place some time after a nuclear war has decimated the planet and left Earth's environment -- especially the weather -- in upheaval. Our anti-hero (who to this reader's eye was nothing like the George Peppard portrayal in the movie version) is tasked with driving a serum from California to Boston in order to help the Bostonians stem a plague. To do this, he must drive across the mostly unpopulated continent with his co-driver and 2 other vehicles. Many challenges are encountered, both natural and unnatural as well as of human origin.

"Damnation Alley" does not have the grand scale of the Amber books or the social commentary of "Lord of Light," but it is an enjoyable read that makes effective use of Zelazny's power to evoke intense images without spending an inordinate number of words. It has aged pretty well for a book written over forty years ago, and all in all a quite enjoyable read for me.

Damnation Alley eBook Roger Zelazny Reviews

Excellent sci-fi novel. I really think that Damnation Alley is overlooked by a lot of readers. It's classic sci-fi by a great writer, and every sci-fi fan should read it at least once in their life.
It’s a short novel, but I think it’s one of Zelazny’s best.
Great book nothing like the movie but an awesome read anyway. Classic science fiction at its best. I totally recommend it!
One of my favorite Zelazny stories. It holds your attention throughout. Set in an America physically divided by the devastation of nuclear war. The protagonist, Hell Tanner, is hired to traverse that no-man's-land from California to Boston on a California government mission. To understand the degree of difference between the movie and the original story the Movie "Tanner" is an Air Force officer with an attitude. The book "Tanner" is the sole surviving Hell's Angel lucky enough to be in prison for murder when a government pogrom wiped out the motorcycle gangs. The only consistent aspect between the two media is the unique all-terrain vehicles necesary for the transit. If you enjoy the genre this book is worth a look.
Straight forward adventure book - too simplistic for adults but good for young adults. Best thing about this book is that it spawned a terrible movie from which a really good kid's series was made - Ark 3 (or is it 2?) - available on DVD.
There's not nearly enough Zelazny available on yet, but I'm glad this one is. When I first read it back in the 70's, it was a movie tie-in edition, and an instant favorite. Now, over thirty years later, it is a gem that reveals facets I overlooked with that first reading. Hell Tanner, on the surface, is a misanthrope and a sociopath, and only a master storyteller like Zelazny could make him likeable, even heroic. Tanner's character arc, from fleeing felon to hellbent hero, is believable because his motives aren't altruistic, but narcissistic, his drive to survive the Alley more a need to satisfy his own ego than to save a plague-torn populace. Zelazny's narrative voice moves the action fluidly, and when he pauses now and then for descriptive flourishes, the imagery is startlingly vivid and cinematic. While Zelazny is best-known for his High Fantasy and Speculative Fiction, this book remains a much-underrated example of his work. Highly and unreservedly recommended.
This isn't a great book but it is a good one if you like the type - & I do. It is the world many years after a nuclear holocaust & life is still very precarious. The protagonist is not particularly likable & the character development is practically non-existant. The descriptions are very good & do not drag on & on until the last few pages. I also noticed that part of the description show this book to be 180 pages & the book I have read is 240 or so. I saw the movie many many years ago & all I remember is Jan Michael Vincent playing Hell Tanner. It wasn't a memorable movie & it is not a memorable book. However it held my interest for the short while to took to read & I think I will look at more Zelazny books since one review mentioned that this is not his best book.
